How to Prepare Your Home for Strong Winds

Strong winds can cause significant damage to your home and property, but there are steps you can take to reduce the risk. By preparing your home for high winds, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your belongings.

Here are some tips to prepare your home for these strong West Texas winds:

Tip #1 Secure Loose Items

Anything that is not properly anchored or secured can be turned into a dangerous projectile by high winds. Move any outdoor furniture, toys, planters, and decorations inside or to a sheltered area.

Tip #2 Trim Trees and Branches

Trees and branches that are too close to your home can be a serious hazard during strong winds. Have a professional tree service trim or remove any trees or branches that could potentially fall or cause damage.

Tip #3 Reinforce Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are some of the most vulnerable areas of your home during a windstorm. Reinforce your windows with storm shutters or impact-resistant glass, and make sure your doors have sturdy locks and hinges.

Tip #4 Check Roof and Gutters

Your roof and gutters (if you have them) are critical components of your home's defense against strong winds. Check for damage or potential leaks and make necessary repairs before a storm hits.

Tip #5 Strengthen Garage Doors

Garage doors can be particularly susceptible to high winds. Make sure your garage door is reinforced with a bracing kit or is hurricane-rated to withstand strong winds.

Tip #6 Consider a Generator

Power outages are common during windstorms, so it's a good idea to have a generator as a backup power source. Make sure you have enough fuel to power the generator for several days.

Preparing your home for strong winds can help minimize the risk of damage and keep you and your family safe. Wondering if wind damage is covered by your current homeowners policy?  Give us a call to review your policy.
