Heat Safety Tips for Oil Field Contractors

Take breaks. Oil contractors work in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment. It is crucial to make sure to take breaks throughout the day. It can be extra helpful to find shade during these respites. 

Avoid peaks of hot weather. Creating a schedule that allows for more strenuous work to occur during the cooler morning temperatures can help workers avoid doing the hardest work during the hottest part of the day. Weather reports may be able to help you plan timetables but remember, the figures on those reports typically reflect the measurements in the shade. Temperatures in the sun, inside buildings or by materials that increase heat may be warmer. 

Dress safely and appropriately. Wearing safety equipment and gear is crucial for oil field contractors. Wearing light-colored clothing along with this gear when possible during hot months can help you stay cool. 

Scale up work gradually. When it’s warm, slowly building up to more strenuous tasks can help your body acclimate to the weather. 

Hydrate. Remembering to hydrate often is an important aspect of heat safety. It can be easy to lose a lot of fluids while working hard in hot weather. Avoiding certain drinks (e.g., those that contain caffeine) can also be helpful.
